Meadowbank sale in doubt due to slump

THE sale of Meadowbank Stadium may be halted by a slump in property prices, it has been reported.
Council officials are understood to be fearful that the global downturn in the property market could impact on the scheme.

Deputy leader Steve Cardownie reportedly said: "Everyone knows there has been a downturn. We are having to take stock of everything."

Meadowbank was earmarked for demolition in March 2004. Plans are to sell off a third of the stadium, allowing smaller facilities to be built on remaining land.

Initial valuations suggested £17 million could be made from the sale of the land, but in the current climate that looks less likely.

The council initially agreed to replace the stadium with a state-of-the-art facility at Sighthill. Officers later announced the £126m vision was not feasible.

Campaigners continue to fight to save Meadowbank – where Olympic hero Chris Hoy began his career – calling for renovation, not demolition.

Forget the sale..Upgrade the facilities and save a packet on duplication in Glasgow for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games.

The neglect of Meadowbank was systematic by the Labour council for years. The call for demolition to build 800 new flats was nothing short of a desperate measure to grab more council tax and to line their pockets (and their mates) in the development stage ....

I would say Chris Hoy's talents don't stop at cycling he got a better brain than the entire Labour party and the Lib Dems put together !

It's a bit strange the council are saying this now. Just a few weeks ago (it seems) they said they were pushing ahead with plans regardless of the current housing market. Something tells me they might just be playing games and will continue to push for Meadowbank to go.

If you would like to do some pushing back (of the good kind), please sign the petition calling for the Scottish Government to invest more in sports, and you can also watch a video made by Hoy and the cyclists if you like :o)
