Little wonder then that Motherwell manager Steven Hammell cut a gloomy figure as he shared his reflections on the Fir Park side’s defeat at Easter Road.

“I think we should deal with it better,” he said of the moment where Connor Shields brought down the advancing Ryan Porteous. “We could have done better there. I felt we deserved to take something from the game. In the first half there wasn’t much in it.

“It was hard one from there but even after that I still felt that we still had a lot of the game."

Hammell also felt that Shields might have had a penalty five minutes after the break.

“You watch it back and it is a penalty,” he said. “Another one of the big moments of the match that didn’t go our way. Connor Shields turns the ball around the corner and gets taken out.”

To add to his irritation, midfielder Blair Spittal had to be taken to hospital after he was on the end of a Joe Newell tackle that left him unable to continue.

“I didn’t think it was a particularly good challenge on him,” lamented the Motherwell boss.

“There was a follow through and then another collision with his ribs and potentially other damage.”
