TV shows switch kids on to science

THE BBC has launched a series of programmes aiming to encourage children’s interest in science.

Presenters Dick and Dom will investigate the lives of people whose ideas have helped shape the modern world in Absolute Genius, while Fierce Earth promises to reveal the true power of planet Earth. A new series of Nina And The Neurons will explore amazing feats of engineering.

Joe Godwin, director of BBC Children, said: “The best children’s programmes educate and inform kids without them even realising. I hope our new raft of science-themed shows will not only entertain children but inspire the next generation of scientists and inventors.”

Other shows to feature on CBBC and CBeebies include Super Human Challenge, in which presenter Tim Fitzhigham tracks down people whose bodies possess superhero qualities.

“Using animation, science and technology this show astounds viewers with just how amazing the human body is and what it can achieve,” the BBC said.

Octonauts – one of CBeebies’s most popular shows – will return this spring as the animated adventure ­heroes go on a journey of discovery through the world’s oceans looking at marine biology and underwater worlds and rescuing sea creatures.

The move follows another successful run of Stargazing Live on the BBC, presented by Professor ­Brian Cox and Dara Ó Briain, which ­attracted record numbers of viewers. Broadcast from ­Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire, it called on ­astronomy experts to explain the ­wonders of the universe.
