PICK OF THE WEEK
The Joy Of The Single
BBC4, Friday, 9pm
Everyone remembers their first one. For future classic choonsmith Jimmy Webb growing up in Oklahoma it was Turn Around, Look At Me by Glen Campbell. “I wore that 45 out,” he says. “Must have played it 500 times in three days. And I got down on my knees under the great dome of stars that is the Midwest of America and I prayed: ‘Lord, let me write a song as good as Turn Around, Look At Me and let me meet Glen Campbell.” Cut to Wichita Lineman, penned by Webb, crooned by Campbell, which was undoubtedly the never-to-be-forgotten first single for thousands more. This doc is every bit as good as it should be with other wizards of the 45 like Graeme Gouldman (For Your Love, Bus Stop, No Milk Today – and these were before his hits with 10cc) recalling the one that did it for them.
BEST COMEDY
Him & Her
BBC3, Sunday, 10pm
A third run for the slacker sitcom begins with Steve returning to the mingin’ cowp with lots of bags of crisps. “Beef, half-price, they were by the till.” Becky is unimpressed but he’s hiding champagne and an engagement ring. Surely not even an unannounced visit from Becks’ vindictive sister and her plonker of a boyfriend can spoil the moment?
BEST SPORT
Champions League Football
Sky Sports 2, Tuesday, 7pm
Amid the gloom of World Cup failure and another famous old club reduced to fighting for its existence, Celtic produced a stunning win over Barcelona. Scottish football: not deid yet.
Now the Celts play Benfica in Lisbon, a city where they’ve won the European Cup and – this was pre-penalty shootouts – a tie on the toss of a coin.
