Travel: 48 Hours in Sorrento

Marina Grande, Sorrento, Italy

Marina Grande, Sorrento, Italy

How to spend two days in Sorrento, Italy...

• Saturday, 2pm Check in to the Hotel Plaza (rooms from £135, www.plazasorrento.com). The sleek modern interiors will keep you cool in the heat, and you’re right in the centre of Sorrento.

• 3pm Visit the Correale di Terranova Museum (www.museocorreale.it, admission E8). Opened in 1924, the imposing four-storey building was created to house the extensive art collection of two brothers from a local noble family.

• 7pm Head down to the marina and enjoy some fresh Italian seafood at Trattoria Da Emilia (081 807 27 20). As the sun sets over the Bay of Naples, it will become clear why Sorrento is bewitchingly nicknamed Land of the Sirens.

• 9pm Make like a local and take your evening stroll, or passeggiata, on the way to the main square, Piazza Tasso. There you will find the popular Fauno Bar (www.faunobar.it), the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail.

• Sunday, 9am Catch the local Circumvesuviana train (www.circumvesuviana.it) and you can be at Pompeii in less than 40 minutes.

• 3pm Once you’re back in Sorrento, don’t miss the impressive Sorrento cathedral. Take note of the inlaid wooden panels, for which Sorrento is famous. If you’d like to see more of the local craft, pop along to the Museo Bottega della Tarsia Lignea (www.alessandrofiorentinocollection.it, admission E8).

• 8pm A trip to Italy wouldn’t be complete without pizza. Sit outside at Giardini di Tasso (081 807 41 45) among the orange trees with a classic margherita and a glass of chilled white wine.

• Monday, 10am Avoid the perilous cliff-top roads and catch the hydrofoil over to Naples (www.alilauro.it) for your flight home. It only takes half an hour, and will give you a final view of the stunning Amalfi Coast as you sail on your way.
