SCOTLAND’S most northerly fish and chip shop has been named the second best in Britain.
Frankie’s Fish & Chips, in Brae on the Shetland mainland, was awarded the runners-up accolade at a prestigious awards ceremony at a top London hotel, hosted by celebrity chef Jean-Christophe Novelli.
It was the second major success in succession for a Scottish chippy.
Last year the Bay Fish and Chip shop in Stonehaven won the national title. This year’s winner of the Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award went to the Quayside in Whitby, North Yorkshire, with Papa’s Barn in Ditton in Kent in third place.
John Gold, the manager of the Shetland chippy, said: “It’s a tremendous honour for us to have been recognised as the best in Scotland and second best in the UK. Several of the judges commented that the standard of entrants this year was higher than it has ever been.”
Valerie Johnson, the shop’s owner who was also in London for the awards ceremony, said: “This gives us a great platform to promote ourselves and the fish and chip shop trade in general. We are delighted.”
Frankie’s Fish & Chips is a family-owned business and opened in September, 2008, in purpose-built premises between the main road through Brae and the east shore of Busta Voe.
