WHAT IS IT?

Australian director Justin Kurzel delivers a faithful and visually stunning adaption of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, filmed on location in Scotland and featuring some proper A-list talent, including Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard in the meaty roles of Lord and Lady Macbeth. A wonderfully stylised aesthetic and the use of Shakespeare’s original verse gives the movie a unique edge and blends the line between cinema and stage.

We all probably know the story, but in case you weren’t paying attention in school: Macbeth (Fassbender) receives a prophecy from a coven of witches that he will one day become the King of Scotland. Consumed by a consequent thirst for power, he begins to carry out heinous acts in the hope that they will bring him closer to the throne, eventually driving both himself and his wife Lady Macbeth (Cotillard) to madness.

DOES IT LOOK ANY GOOD?

From an entirely visual perspective the film looks absolutely sensational. Kurzel makes the most of the wide open spaces and stunning architecture that the Scottish Highlands had to offer, meaning that virtually every scene is beautiful. After so much hype, though, a few audience members may be a little underwhelmed with the movie, which is - after all - the thirteenth on-screen regurgitation of Macbeth in the last century. That being said, if you want to see Scotland in all its glory on the big screen then Kurzel’s Macbeth is absolutely worth a watch.
