PAY-AS-YOU-GO mobile phones are predicted to be one of this Christmas’s favourites – particularly for those pople who do not already own a smartphone.

According to research by Ofgem, six out of ten people in the UK have not yet upgraded to a smartphone.

However, mobile sellers predict a huge surge in ownership – with prices for the cheapest pay-as-you-go models falling dramatically.

According to research by Ofcom, 39 per cent of UK adults own a smartphone – which is a figure 12 per cent higher than last year.

More than a third of smartphone users said the device was the main one they used to connect to the internet. Graham Stapleton, chief commercial officer at Carphone Warehouse, said they expect cheaper smartphones to be a popular present, adding: “We have seen smartphone adoption grow exponentially.

“It’s great that, this year, we will be able to offer these products to everyone, with a host of value for money smartphones, so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of having the latest technology.

“At Carphone Warehouse, we’re well positioned to offer impartial advice to customers, no matter their budget or requirements.

“We think these latest offers will prove very popular and see more people get on the mobile phone ladder.”
