Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses. A spokesman said: "This was a serious incident and the victim is lucky not to have been more badly injured.

"The pub was busy at the time and its patrons were obviously alarmed. Such incidents are relatively rare in Edinburgh and we are keen to trace those responsible as quickly as possible.

"We are appealing for anyone who was in the area of Jock's Lodge around the time of the incident, who saw or heard anything suspicious, to contact police immediately."

No-one else was injured as a result of the incident. The suspects are believed to be aged in their mid-twenties to mid-thirties.

The first man was wearing a dark jacket, while the second man wore a dark hooded top.

They made off in the direction of Meadowbank Stadium. Police sniffer dogs have been working at the scene of the shooting

Police are also recovering CCTV footage from the surrounding area and have been carrying out house-to-house inquiries.

Officers have placed a cordon around an area stretching from a lane next to the bar down to the side of its beer garden.

Two refuse bins belonging to flats across the road from the pub have also been sealed off.

Neighbours said they did not hear the shooting but saw a young man being stretchered out of the premises after the attack.

There were unconfirmed reports that the incident may be related to an ongoing feud between two families in the area.

Shaukat Ali, 49, owner of Shaukat's Convenience Store in Wolseley Terrace, said: "The rumour is that it is a family feud. The pub used to be frequented by older people but now a younger crowd is coming down at the weekends and causing a lot of havoc."

Aliasghar Mirza, 56, who owns Mirza's Fruit across the road from the pub, said he was scared to walk home to his flat beside the pub following the shooting.

The father of five said: "My wife called me in the shop to ask me if I was OK and if I had seen anything, as I don't close until 9pm.

"I only saw lots of police cars and when I heard it was a shooting I was too scared to walk home.

"I have stopped my children playing in the street as well because it is so bad now."

Muhammed Azhar, who owns Azhar Newsagents, also across the road from the pub, said: "There are gangs here now. Dogwalkers do not walk their dogs late now because they are worried about the trouble from the alcohol problems around here."
