Theatre review: A Geisha Samurai, Paradise In The Vault (Venue 29), Edinburgh

AN ATTEMPT to understand her younger sister’s suicide lies at the heart of writer/performer Shoko Ito’s play, though combining that story with one about a time-travelling Samurai who starts a computer games empire is improbable, to say the least.

A Geisha Samurai

Paradise in The Vault (Venue 29)

Star rating: * *

Performing in Japanese, with English supertitles, she tests the limits of credibility with plot twists, attempts at humour and over-exuberant acting. Somewhere beneath all this there is a story worth hearing, of a gifted young woman who loses confidence in herself, and her sister’s discovery of hope on the other side of grief.

• Until 12 August. Today 7:35pm.
