Review: Urban Fairytale, theSpace @ Venue45 (Venue 45)

There’s a right-on revolutionary message somewhere in this show by Bishop’s Stortford College, but it’s buried beneath an overloaded storyline, and a sense of humour that’s at best snickering-schoolboy-grade and at worst lazily offensive.

A preposterously wide-ranging mess of quick-fire scenes woven together in modern fairytale format satirises nearly every British societal issue of the moment – from footballers with super-injunctions to phone hacking, austerity cuts and unscrupulous bankers. The gag about a chav mum with kids called Fritzl and Madeleine, the latter greeted with the line “long time no see,” is dismayingly off-colour.
