Review: Three Cities, Sweet Grassmarket (Venue 18)

Three conversations involving three woman in three cities – a budding, middle-aged writer in Dublin, fuelled by tea and chocolate biscuits; a stressed mum-to-be from London on the phone to her midwife and a young dancer in New York who has been deserted by her date – are woven together in this new work which compares the characters’ attitudes to online dating, adolescent sex and pregnancy, teenage or otherwise, before veering randomly into post-9/11 politics.

There is plenty to identify with in their run-of-the-mill ramblings, but only the occasional flash of insight.
