Gender gap in judiciary

MEN are three times more likely than women to be appointed to judicial office in Scotland.

Official figures also show the applicants for some of the highest legal positions in the country are overwhelmingly male

The Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland, which conducts recruitment for judges, sheriffs and other judicial positions, revealed that in two years, 58 appointments were recommended to ministers, of which 43 were men and 14 women.

A Scottish Government spokesman said: "The responsibility lies not with the Appointments Board – its appointments broadly reflect the gender split in applications. The challenge is to convince women there are opportunities."
