Review: Amateur Transplants: Adam Kay’s Bum Notes, Pleasance Courtyard

He IS turning into an interesting stand-up, Dr Adam Kay of Amateur Transplants. Along with his smutty, silly songs, he spends more time at the mic talking to us – about his spinal surgery, private hospitals, porn, his fear of flying and problems finding a boyfriend.

***

He is dedicatedly downbeat, scrounging drink from the audience and mixing his own hideous cocktail with it.

I should remind readers that Adam Kay is a qualified doctor. Some of the songs here are old, and some new but even the old ones are greeted like friends. The Leonard Cohen singalong section is now an audience participation opportunity. You would be amazed how competitive people get about guessing the punchlines.

Of the new material, I particularly liked what Kay does with It’s Raining Men and Pretty Fly for a White Guy. And the Mamma Mia is simply glorious, ghastly scatological silliness of the highest order. And yes, he does the London Underground song.

Until 27 August. Today 7pm.
