Preview: And They Played Shang-A-Lang, The Stand 3

SHANG-A-LANG. School disco. Punk rock. First love. Sexual awakening. Death... the Fringe debut from Edinburgh-based CRAFT Theatre Company has it all and a whole lot more besides.

Written by local playwright and producer Derek Douglas, And They Played Shang-A-Lang is a comedy musical that draws on his experiences of growing up in and around Edinburgh in the 70s.

“We all remember our childhood for different reasons,” says Douglas. “Some happy, some sad.

“I wanted to condense some of the moments that meant so much to me from my own childhood into a musical, so that I could share them.

“The lovely thing I’ve come to realise is that all our childhoods have so many familiar events and happenings - it’s just that in the 70s there was a particularly good soundtrack to live them out too.”

With a backbeat of chart-topping hits from the period - including Bohemian Rhapsody, Waterloo, YMCA and You’re The One That I Want - this play of what growing up in the 70s was like will have you laughing, crying and recalling your own school days.

And They Played Shang-A-Lang, The Stand 3, York Place, Sunday-26 August (not 13), 12.50pm, £10 (£8), www.thestand.co.uk
