Going out: Bo’ness Hippodrome | RSNO Children’s Concerts | Scottish Ballet

What we’re looking forward to in arts and entertainment this week

Film

All this year, the Hippodrome cinema in Bo’ness has been marking its 100th birthday. The celebrations conclude next Sunday with a wrap party whose lighthearted atmosphere is signalled by the choice of accompanying film – the much-mocked Brigadoon, possibly Hollywood’s least ever convincing portrayal of Scotland. A good excuse for a party with a tartan dress code though.

Dance

If you’ve never been to one of the RSNO’s children’s classical concerts then head to the website and watch clips from last year’s Space Invaders, in which an entire orchestra dress up as sci-fi characters and are conducted by light-saber, much to the delight of the young audience. This week the series adopts a Christmas theme with music by Ravel, Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev accompanied by festive high-jinks from presenters Owen and Olly. It’s Snowtime! is at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Saturday and Edinburgh’s Usher Hall on 9 December.

Children

Ashley Page has moved on from Scottish Ballet, but he’s still there in spirit as the company revives his five-star production of The Nutcracker for another festive tour. It opens at Glasgow Theatre Royal on Saturday, where it continues until 29 December. After that it goes on to Edinburgh Festival Theatre from 8-12 January; His Majesty’s Theatre from 16-19 January; and Eden Court in Inverness from 23-26 January. On Saturday there’s an extra (and shorter) afternoon show for small children.

Music

Are the Human League in or out of fashion these days? It seems to make very little difference to the now middle-aged pop trio, whose youngest member, Joanne Catherall, turned 50 in September, and whose setlist is divided about equally between pioneering electronica (Empire State Human) and cheesy, dated 1980s pop (Human). They play the O2 Academy on Wednesday.
