Festival reviews: Lingua Frank; Playhouse on the Fringe (venue 59a)
When the funniest thing about a comedy play is one of its props – in Lingua Frank’s case a disturbing life-sized portrait of Alex Salmond lying on a chaise longue, naked but for his sporran – you can tell you’ve not exactly experienced a theatrical tour de force.
Two rival language tutors – bumbling Englishman Frank and super-obnoxious American Chest Armstrong – compete over a woman and also to have their learn-English-quick kits certified by Scottish fundamentalist senior teacher and closet homosexual Bollard.
An hour of laugh-free tedium later, save for said painting of Salmond in the buff, the point of this farce is no more obvious.
