Festival review: The Society of Ethical Cat Burglars; TheSpace @ Jury’s Inn (venue 260)

“Like Fight Club run by Kirstie Allsopp,” is how the trio of “ethical cat burglars” at the centre of this play from Edinburgh’s Foolproof Theatre describe their girls’ club.

Of course, that they break into people’s houses just to examine their furnishings and fittings is an over-the-top scenario – however, the three personable but amateur actresses here aren’t capable of the wildly overexaggerated performances needed to rein it in.

Fiona Stewart’s script shows plenty of promise, though, with a few droll gags worthy of Victoria Wood and a confident handle on the psyche of a particular kind of middle-aged, middle-class woman who gets excited by an Aga and a full set of Le Creuset.
