Festival review: The Jhiva of Nietzsche; TheSpace @ Surgeons Hall (venue 53)

This is one of those instances where the concept is better than its realisation.

Cypriot company Theatro Transcendental’s thought-provoking production traces the journey of the “jhiva” – ie soul – of one of the 19th-century’s greatest thinkers, Frederic Nietzsche, from his conception through to his death. During its journey it is in constant conflict with his mind.

All of this is acted out by a performer who plays the soul, while the mind is portrayed on a digital screen. There are some amusing touches but it runs out of steam fairly early on and gets rather bogged down and difficult to follow.
