Edinburgh’s theatres: Scottish Ballet Autumn Season at the Festival Theatre
Run For It, a new work choreographed by Martin Lawrance with a Martin Boyce set, really caught the vibe at its premier during the Cultural Olympiad.
Now Scottish Ballet bring it home, with William Forsythe’s jaw-dropping Workwithinwork, and Hans van Manen’s Five Tangos. Fiery stuff all round. • Festival Theatre, 11-13 October
Phantom of the Opera
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s smash hit returns to Edinburgh for the first time in over a decade. The new production, directed by Laurence Connor, boasts new design, costumes and staging. Earl Carpenter will be taking over the title role from John Owen-Jones on 1 October, while the show is in Edinburgh. • Katie Hall will be playing Christine. Playhouse, 20 September-20 October
Good Grief
The King’s reopens with bigger seats after refurbishment. Penelope Keith kicks off the autumn season in Keith Waterhouse’s play about a woman whose thoughts are not as pure as she feels they ought to be after her husband’s death. The seats might be bigger, but some things don’t change. • King’s Theatre, 1-6 October
The Guid Sisters
The stage of the Royal Lyceum will be fit to burst in this Scots version of Québécois hit, Les Belles-Soeurs. Kathryn Howden plays Germaine Lauzon, who has won a million Green Shield stamps and calls on her neighbours to help lick and stick them in the saver books. Karen Dunbar, Molly Innes and Ann Louise Ross are among the cast of 15 women in this big NTS co-production. • Royal Lyceum, 21 September-13 October
I Dreamed A Dream
Elaine C Smith stars in the musical version of the life of Blackburn’s most famous daughter, Susan Boyle. The production follows Susan’s life from her humble beginnings in West Lothian to her acclaim down in London on Britain’s Got Talent and on to international stardom. • Festival Theatre, 21-29 September
