Dance review: Drop It, Greenside (Venue 231), Edinburgh

NEW York-based Maridee Slater steps out of the dark and tells us this was supposed to be a two-person production of The Cherry Orchard but her co-star dropped out because it wasn’t ready. He has a point.

Drop It

Greenside (Venue 231)

Rating: **

Maridee is an engaging performer who delivers an intriguing yet fragmented show pairing Chekhov with touching anecdotes about her relationship with her father – and also the “opportunity” to shake a box seemingly containing his ashes. After giving us shots of whisky, she insensitively presses an older audience member about his deceased father. “That’s cruel,” he says – particularly so as, like much of the performance, it lacks an obvious dramatic point.

• Until 11 August. Today 10:50pm.
