A crew of lifeboatmen, plumbers and a mountain guide plan to row 100 miles from St Kilda to Skye

A crew of eight novice rowers planning a 100-mile trip from remote St Kilda to Skye in a boat which has not been in the water for more than a century have embarked on a night-time training mission.

The crew, which is made up of lifeboatmen, plumbers and a mountain guide, set off from Portree harbour on Skye in the Aurora. The 12-hour trip, which took the crew north to Brothers Point, then east to circumnavigate the Isle of Rona, and south back to Portree, is part of the last phase of training before setting off on their epic journey this summer
