More police in Aberdeen to curb crime

A total of 41 extra officers have been made available by Police Scotland to carry out high-visibility patrols in the north and south of Aberdeen as well as in the city centre.

The deployment is the latest move in the “’Campaign against Violence” which was launched last April when the national force was established.

A force spokesman said: “As part of the operation, officers will carry out high visibility patrols within communities and visit ‘on’ and ‘off-sale’ licensed premises to ensure they are operating within the terms of their licence. Those subject to special bail conditions requiring them to be at home during specific times will be visited and officers will focus their attention on areas vulnerable to underage drinking, drug taking, antisocial and criminal behaviour. Patrols will also target offenders wanted in connection with alcohol fuelled crimes.”

Inspector Murray Main, said: “The impact of alcohol-related violence and antisocial behaviour can be felt throughout communities and the fear of crime can prevent people from visiting areas, friends or relatives, especially at night.

“While Aberdeen remains one of the safest cities to live and visit, like elsewhere it also attracts a small number of individuals who are unable to behave or are intent on causing trouble. After listening to the concerns of local residents we are deploying further officers to carry out high-visibility patrols right across the city to provide reassurance and safety.”

Since April last year, the Campaign against Violence has resulted in an additional 417 police officers being deployed in communities across the Granite City to provide extra visibility, detect crime and help keep communities safe. Over 200 people have been arrested or charged.
