My first car: Steve Hughes, comedian

MY FIRST car was a Holden. It was quite cool in a way, mainly the way it looked, even though it was a complete shitbox and I didn’t even have a licence. I probably bought it because it was cheap and looked cool. Lots of cars looked cool back then – this would have been 1987 when I lived in a two-bedroom house with five blokes.

But getting back to the point, I feel cars have been used in the modern age to condition us to a hive mentality, or is it just a coincidence that all cars in all countries are now hatchbacks or four-wheel drives – no style, no coolness, just uniformity and enforced conformity to driving a stupid car?

I saw a smart car the other day that was so small it was dumb… no joke.

Anyway, I never even got a licence for about another three years, and the cops put a “defect” sticker on my Torana, which I then took to the mechanics who gave me about another 30 things that needed fixing on it, so I let him have it and went back to walking.
