Smells like team spirit: Sir Paul McCartney to front Nirvana reunion gig

SIR PAUL McCartney is set to join forces with the surviving members of grunge band Nirvana for a reunuion gig in New York.
Founder members Dave Grohl and bassist Krist Novoselic along with unofficial fourth member Pat Smear are due to perform a new song at a charity concert for victims of Hurricane Sandy, with the former Beatle replacing the late Kurt Cobain.
The concert will mark the first time that the surviving members have played together for 20 years - but Sir Paul has revealed that he has been working in secret with Grohl, frontman of the Foo Fighters, and Novoselic after a recent meeting at a recording studio.
The former Beatle was asked to come along to ‘jam with some mates’ by Grohl, and the 70-year-old rocker suggested that they make something up on the spot, leading to the new song due to be debuted tonight.
Sir Paul admitted: “I didn’t really know who they were. They were saying how good it was to be back together. I said ‘Whoa - you guys haven’t played together for all that time?
“Somebody whispered to me ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt’. I couldn’t believe it.”
Cobain took his own life in 1994, after a well-publicised battle with depression and drug addiction.
The Rolling Stones are also set to play at the concert this evening.
