Gig review: Meursault at Stereo, Glasgow
STEREO has long been a reliable source of eclectic and ultimately rewarding live entertainment, and on Wednesday it played host to a typically diverse bill.
Star rating: * * * *
Siobhan Williamson’s brittle acoustic gems were followed by the often incomparable work of Adam Stafford. Armed with a loop pedal, a guitar and a head filled to the brim with eccentric arrangements, his set was a joy to behold.
As expected, however, it was headliners Meursault who stole the show with a bombastic return to Glasgow, touring on the back of their fantastic new album Something for the Weakened.
Flittin, from their latest album made its presence felt with a bold, sweeping wall of sound as vocalist and Edinburgh native Neil Pennycook led the charge with his confident, emotionally-wrought vocal style. Tempered with deadpan humour between songs, the band were a picture of health as they stormed through a set which focused primarily on SFTW but also took in a handful of nods to their past, including a stunning solo version of William Henry Miller Pt. 1, which was arguably the highlight of an altogether thrilling performance.
