LEADING folk group Fisherman’s Friends have confirmed the death of singer Trevor Grills following a tragic accident at the weekend which has already claimed the life of their tour manager.

Mr Grills, 54, and Paul McMullen, 44, were hit by a falling metal door in a a loading bay while preparing for a gig at the G Live event in Guildford, Surrey, on Saturday.

Mr McMullen had suffered serious injuries to his legs and died at the scene, while Mr Grills was taken by ambulance to hospital.

The band, who were formed in 1995, shot to fame after signing a lucrative record deal three years ago and have appeared at major events like Glastonbury and the Cambridge Folk Festival.

Fisherman’s Friends, who had been forced to scrap the band’s planned appearance following the event on Saturday morning, confirmed Mr Grills’ death on its official Facebook page.

A statement read: “The Fisherman’s Friends announce with great sadness that their friend and fellow band member Trevor Grills passed away last night as a result of severe head injuries inflicted during an accident on Saturday 9 February.

“Trevor was a much loved and valued friend to all of us and was an integral part of the Port Isaac community. He will be sadly missed.

“Our thoughts are with Trevor’s family at this very difficult time.”

Ian Brown, manager of Fisherman’s Friends, said: “It’s awful, he was a lovely man.

“It’s a very close knit community in Port Isaac and we’re just doing what we can to help the Fisherman’s Friends and the families.

“Trevor was a very special person and will be sadly missed.”

In a statement, Darcus Beese, the president of Island Records, the group’s label, said: “Everyone here is shocked by this tragic event, our hopes and prayers go out to the friends and families of those involved.”
