Album review: Stan Getz
STAN GETZ At The Shrine Verve 0602517967076, £11.74 * * * *
Recorded in 1954, this live album features tenor great Stan Getz on sizzling form – despite being introduced as "a leading exponent of the cool school" by none other than Duke Ellington, whose band had appeared in the same concert. Getz's quintet powers through a programme which includes Ellington's It Don't Mean A Thing, but it's the musical rapport between the tenor saxophonist and trombonist Bob Brookmeyer that provides the most memorable moments. Shame about Getz's tedious announcements.
