Album Review: Quincy Jones
QUINCY JONES Quincy Jones Explores the Magic of Henry Mancini **
Verve 0602517995741, 9.99
This 1968 album is so quintessentially Sixties-sounding that it's more of a must-have for lovers of the pop music of that period than for jazz aficionados – despite the participation of such top jazz musicians as Zoot Sims, Clark Terry, Mundell Lowe, Gary Burton and Milt Hinton. That said, there's a definite jazz feel to Dreamsville, The Pink Panther and Odd Ball, while Mancini's flair for melancholy and/or menace shines through.
