Album Review: Monty Alexander, Calypso Blues
JAZZ MONTY ALEXANDER Calypso Blues ****Chesky Records SACD339, £12.99
Subtitled The Songs Of Nat King Cole, this CD is the veteran pianist's latest homage to a favourite singer (it follows his tributes to Bob Marley and Tony Bennett), and it's probably his most personal as Cole was a primary influence on him when he was growing up in Jamaica. The tracks here are from Cole's vocal albums rather than his jazz output – but Alexander plays them in his distinctive, swinging and colourful style, accompanied by his regular bassist and drummer.
