SO THIS this is how it’s going to be: every year Susan Boyle will release a new set of cover versions in nice time to capture the Christmas market.
Susan Boyle: Standing Ovation
Syco, £12.99

Where her previous albums threw up a few curveball song choices – The Rolling Stones, Lou Reed, Depeche Mode – Standing Ovation plays it completely safe with its predictable selection from established musicals such as Oliver, Cats, Phantom and Les Mis. Once again, Boyle is in fine voice, mining her pop-melancholy style with songs which are tinged with sadness, or at least a touch of melodrama. She and Michael Crawford flex their best West End vowels on Music of The Night and there are a couple of functional duets with her teen idol Donny Osmond, but on this outing she only sounds emotionally connected when she tackles Out Here On My Own from Fame.
