Album review: Ralph Sutton and Kenny Davern

RALPH SUTTON AND KENNY DAVERN Live at the Thunderbird Lodge ***** VC 4377 – visit www.jazznblues.co.uk/

Pianist Sutton and clarinettist Davern – once regular visitors to the Nairn and Edinburgh jazz festivals – are no longer with us, but these live recordings from 1983 and 1984 is a fitting reminder of their talents. This line-up, with bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Gus Johnson, wasn't heard in Scotland. Sutton was a master of stride piano while Davern was the most dynamic clarinettist of his generation, and their work together is of the highest, joyful order.
