Album Review: Amy Macdonald
AMY MACDONALD A Curious Thing *** Mercury2731140, £13.99
Even with the success of her debut, This Is The Life, there was the feeling Amy was a folkie trapped in a rock chick's image.
Here, on the song Ordinary Life, even her intonation of "the pap-per-azi drive you mad" sounds hung up on 19th-century tradition, not 21st-century attitude.
Elsewhere, the jaunty piano playing has the air of Mary Hopkin on a high, while Macdonald chews up vowels on Next Big Thing. It's a singing characteristic common in her work, which is entirely personable but strangely unremarkable. The production, meanwhile, gets so carried away with itself Amy's personality struggles to get through.
