Rail upgrades

Although I share Joe Darby’s feeling (Letters, 23 February) that the proposal to build a high-speed rail line between Edinburgh and Glasgow by an
unspecified new route is a bit
odd, it should be pointed out that two of the four present rail routes between Scotland’s
largest cities are already electrified –via Carstairs and via Bathgate – while a third, via Falkirk, is currently being electrified at a cost of £650 million, exactly as your correspondent suggests might be desirable sometime in the future.
