Piping Live! kicks off in George Square

GLASGOW is set to play host to thousands of pipers from around the world for a week-long festival to be held in the city this week.

A total of 30,000 visitors and 8,000 pipers, drummers and performers are expected to turn out for Piping Live! Glasgow International PipingFestival which runs from Monday until Sunday.

The week will culminate in the World Pipe Band Championships on Saturday.

The World Championships have been held in the city for almost 70 years while Piping Live! is entering its ninth year.

Last year’s championship winners were Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band from Belfast, which will defend its title against bands from countries including Scotland, Canada, Denmark and the USA.

Piping Live! features musicians from 10 European countries, including Bulgaria, Estonia, Italy and Sweden, with almost 150 free and ticketed events.
