Scottish fact of the day: Burns Supper

A portrait of Robert Burns by Archibald Skirving

A portrait of Robert Burns by Archibald Skirving

The first Burns Supper in the world was held in 1801 at Burns Cottage.

It was held by a group of the Burns’ acquaintances as a chance to celebrate the writer’s life and works.

Burns Cottage can be found in Alloway, South Ayrshire. It was the first home of Robert Burns, who was born there on the 25th January, 1759. The residence was built by his father, William Burness.

Now, Burns Suppers are held across the world on January 25th in honour of the poet.
