Robert Louis Stevenson papers found

A “TREASURE trove” of documents from the family of Robert Louis Stevenson have been found in the abandoned site of an old museum.

The documents, letters from the famous family of lighthouse builders and civil engineers, were found in an old tea chest, under a plank of wood, in the North Berwick Museum, which closed down a decade ago.

They included a letter from Robert Stevenson, the grandfather of the Treasure Island writer who designed the Bell Rock Lighthouse, and were found as workers surveyed the old building ahead of a planned refurbishment.

June Douglas Hamilton, chair of the Friends of the North Berwick Museum, said: “These letters show the important links the Stevenson family had with North Berwick over two generations.”
