Scarista beach on Harris

The Isle of Harris is joined to the Isle of Lewis. It is home to a variety of landscapes, with stunning beaches in the south, and a mountainous terrain in the north. Many have commented on the Lunar feel that the north of the island has. The east coast of the island is home to some of the oldest rocks in the world to date, with some as old as three thousand million years old.

Location: Outer Hebrides

Population: 1,984 (2001 census)

Gaelic Name: Na Hearadh

HISTORY

The rocky landscape of Harris was formed as a result of glaciers which covered the island during the ice age. Harris has been inhabited for over 6000 years, and was first invaded by the Vikings in the 9th century. Many of the place names found on the Isle of Harris are of Norse origin. The islands of Harris and Lewis, although joined, have historically gone their separate ways. Today, however, the islands are much more united.

The Harris Tweed Industry has been central to the history of the island. For centuries islanders on Harris have woven the cloth famously known as Harris Tweed. Despite the Scottish mainland mechanising the cloth industry, the Harris Tweed company retained the traditional methods of weaving cloth. Today, however, more modern methods have been introduced. Harris Tweed has famously been used by fashion designer Vivienne Westwood and has also been worn by Madonna.

ATTRACTIONS

The rocky and mountainous landscape of Harris make it a haven for walkers and climbers. The white sandy beaches of Luskentyre and Scarista are popular destinations for surfing and kite buggying. The Harris Golf Club offers a great course with stunning views for the golfers among us, although the course is closed on a Sunday. Capital village of Harris, Tarbert, is home to the famous Harris Tweed Shop, a popular destination for tourists. A trip around the island by boat is also well worth a journey to see the stunning views.

HOW TO GET THERE

Ferry is the preferred method of transport to Harris with Calmac the main operator . Ferries run from the mainland to Tarbert, as well as inter-island ferries. Once in Harris there is an efficient bus service as well as car-hiring opportunities.
