Island of the Week: Eigg
The isle of Eigg
Located just a few miles off Ardnamurchan, and south of Skye, lies the isle of Eigg.
LOCATION: Scottish Inner Hebrides
POPULATION: 76
GAELIC NAME: Eige
HISTORY: Eigg has been inhabited since the bronze and iron ages, with evidence left from both eras.
Perhaps the most notorious event in the history of Eigg is the massacre resulting from a lengthy feud between the Macdonald and the Macleod clans in the 16th century. Almost the entire population of the island were killed - close- to 400 people - in what is now known as the Massacre Cave. Legend has it that a group of young Macleods visited the island but were thought to be a little too leery towards the local women. As punishment they were put into a small boat and cast adrift, but after being rescued they returned with reinforcements.
The islanders almost succeeded in evading discovery when they hid in a cave, but the Macleods found them and built a fire near the entrance to asphyxiate them with the smoke.
HOW TO GET THERE:
There are ferry services operated by Caledonian MacBrayne from Mallaig, or the Sheerwater boat from Arisaig.
WHAT TO DO:
Eigg offers a peaceful trip, with the caves and beaches all giving you a reason to explore the island. An Sgurr, known as The Notch, is the most distinctive piece of landscape on the island and definitely worth a look. A walk to the top takes just a few hours and can result in some breathtaking views.
WHERE TO STAY:
The Glebe Barn hostel can accommodate larger groups, while those in search of a quieter time can seek out one of the many self-catering cottages, bothies, or campsites.
