Trailer of the week: The Great Gatsby
BAZ Lurhmann, the director of Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge, takes on F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic – in 3D!
Yikes.
Quite. The first trailer is very Baz Luhrmann. ‘New York, 1922,’ breathes Tobey Maguire in sleazy voiceover – to music by Jay-Z and the kind of lavishly detailed, CGI-created aerial shot of Manhattan that could only have been created in the past ten years or so. It’s followed by scenes of decadent partying in the home of enigmatic millionaire Gatsby, which should look spectacular in 3D. Any Moulin Rouge-style singing and dancing? Judging by the trailer, the film actually seems very faithful to Fitzgerald’s book, in terms of character and dialogue. DiCaprio – who has already played a troubled millionaire in The Aviator – looks like a terrific Gatsby, stylish and debonair but with barely concealed demons. And Carey Mulligan, with her blonde bob, seems perfectly cast as a 1920s flapper. When is it out?
26 December.
