Trailer of the week: Grabbers
An Irish horror comedy where sea-monsters terrorise the locals - unless they’re blind drunk
What is it?
A horror comedy set in an Irish seaside village where nasty tentacled sea monsters are attacking people from the water. The best defence, it turns out, is to stay dry, and to stay drunk (the booze is poisonous to the monsters, apparently). So the locals retreat to the pub and get hammered. Think Alien meets Shaun of the Dead meets Whisky Galore.
Does it look any good?
It looks like a hoot. Grabbers has already had enthusiastic reviews at this year’s Sundance film festival, and the trailer offers a promising mix of shocks and knockabout humour–- even if not everyone will be thrilled at another film peddling drunk Irish stereotypes. Ruth Bradley, in particular, is very funny as the new cop in town (“It’s always the quiet places where the mad shit happens.”). A woman who can get a belly laugh just from the line “It’s OK, I’m alright” has to be worth watching for a whole movie.
When is it out?
August, if you live in Ireland. The rest of us will need to wait a bit longer. The sooner the better, we say.
