DANIEL Day-Lewis continued his domination of the awards season by triumphing at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles.
The British star, who has won a Golden Globe and is favourite to win his third Oscar, was recognised for his performance in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln.
He said: “It occurred to me, it was an actor that murdered Abraham Lincoln, and therefore, somehow, it is only so fitting that every now and then an actor tries to bring him back to life.”
It was good night for the stars of ITV’s Downton Abbey, who won the TV drama cast award. Scottish actress Phyllis Logan, who plays housekeeper Mrs Hughes, told the audience they were “absolutely overwhelmed by it all”.
Other winners included Ben Affleck’s Argo, which won the overall cast performance award, and Jennifer Lawrence, best actress for Silver Linings Playbook.
Les Miserables star Anne Hathaway and Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln), won the supporting actor honours, and there was a lifetime achievement award for Dick Van Dyke.
