Game review: Soul Calibur V
Soul Calibur V - PS3/Xbox 360, 44.99
SINCE its glittering debut on Sega Dreamcast in 1999, the Soul Calibur series has delivered diminishing returns, but Soul Calibur V is a superb addition to the canon.
Skipping ahead 17 years, classic characters have aged and learned some new moves, while new characters bring fresh fighting styles to the table that really shake up the formula.
Soul Calibur’s winning blend of weapon-based combat remains as technical and as versatile as ever. From athletic fencing styles, to the brute force of heavy axe swings, characters are diverse and will suit players of many disciplines.
Once again, the character creation system is deep and gives rise to superb custom characters which can be entered into the online circuit in the quest for glory against players all around the world. As you win matches, you will unlock more custom character elements and online titles, levelling up as you go.
It will take you ages to discover everything Soul Calibur V has to offer, and even if the story mode consists of a string of threadbare battles, the arcade and online modes offer a wealth of replay value and depth.
Even guest character Ezio Auditore – of Assassin’s Creed fame – serves as a viable addition to the character roster, with his deft combination of blade, sword and wrist gun attacks. He’s right at home in a game that epitomises the very best that the Soul Calibur series has to offer.
