Apple iWatch: Patent details revealed

THE iWatch may have moved a step closer to reality, as details have been released of Apple’s patent application for the technology rumoured to feature in the device.

• iWatch to be ‘slap wrap’ device with AMOLED screen

• Device will be integrated with iPad, iPhone etc.

• Variable display based on wrist size and ability to sense user’s movements featured in patent

The patent application details a flexible video device that is worn by its user, and which can change the style and content on its display depending on the size of the object it is attached to.

The application seems to suggest a ‘slap wrap’-style bracelet, which folds flat when not curled around the wrist. The device is planned to use a multi-touch screen, work with other Apple products in displaying information, and feature an accelerometer to tell the iWatch when the user is looking at it.

The iWatch is also planned to be solar-powered, and feature a power-saving ‘basic’ mode.

The iWatch is believed to have been in development for some time, and the patent application was initially filed in August 2011.

Apple reportedly has a team of 100 product designers working on the project, which suggests the device is moving towards production.
