Christmas markets have been a global tradition since medieval times, and this year Scotland is honouring that tradition with some of the biggest and best markets in Britain.
Here are just five of the finest offerings this festive season.
This year’s market on the mound is all about food, fun fairs and firepunch.
The infamous Edinburgh wheel overlooks some new fairground attractions this year, as Princes Street Gardens host to a selection of new rides and activities for children.
If your stomach survives the likes of the Ski Jump, there is plenty of food over at the Mound Precinct, where you will find the German market stalls. Wash down those bratwursts and frankfurts with a glass of firepunch, the number one alcoholic winter warmer on offer this year.
Glasgow’s Christmas has gone global this year, with stalls from as far afield as Russia and Ecuador. The programme also promises a special guest all the way from Lapland.
Visitors are invited to glug down the Gluhwein, enjoy the best beers from Bavaria and sample the international cuisine on offer.
The famous Funk Fair in Dundee is back on the 9th December this year. It promises to deliver a top-notch Christmas shopping experience, mixing vintage and retro classics with contemporary design items. Expect a mix of new and vintage clothing, antiques, accesories and much more. This is the place for shoppers who are rocking around the retro tree this Christmas.
Drum Castle, Garden and Estate are the proud hosts of this year’s Holly Fest and Elves’ Toy Factory. The event, which runs across the 8th and 9th of December, boasts and indoor Christmas market, a secret chamber containing an elves’ toy factory, and an arts and crafts session to keep the wee ones entertained. Highlights include a ceremonial lighting of the Advent wreath at 2pm.
Crafty Scots should head down to King Edward Street in Perth on the 8th December, where the Christmas Craft Market will be in full swing. This is the ideal place to pick up handmade gifts and sample traditional food and drink.
