Lynne McCrossan: It’s the height of stupidity, but we all do it

Abi Himdle, 19, from Marchmont. Abis scarf caught my eye as she shopped her way down Princes Street. It is from Internacionale, and the trousers and shoes are Primark. Jacket is New Look and she picked up her bag in New York.

WATCHING women wobble while walking in heels makes you wonder why we do it.

Over the past few years platforms have scaled nose-bleed heights. Ankle support has disappeared and heel width has gone from spike to toothpick in width.

This coincides with that clunking sound each clumsy step makes, letting the whole world see, and hear, how inept we are at walking in such silly shoes.

This struck me as a total babe braved a stroll down Gorgie Road wearing death-defying footwear.

Two older ladies passed comment on how ridiculous the girl looked. Initially dismissing their unkind words for jealousy I hoovered to hear a little more. “Those stupid things on her feet ruin a lovely outfit.”

And right there in that sentence my rose-tinted glasses came off.

What had seemed a confident strut now struck me as Bambi on ice. The concentration to stay upright was palpable. And the feminine outfit she was wearing did appear ruined by her out-of-proportion feet.

Women, why are we wearing shoes that kill our feet and make us walk wonky?

Oh, I know. Because male designers have no idea how hard they are to wear and think we’ll choose looks over practicality. Guilty!
