If you want to roll back the years, get yourself an age-defying haircut
WHILE some people happily turn to cosmetic surgery to hold on to their youthful looks, this can be a little too daunting for many. If you are squeamish or like to keep things au natural, there are many ways to do this without going under the knife. And the easiest is with a haircut.
Having the right haircut can give you an instant non-surgical facelift. I know too well that many people visit the salon regularly and have the same trim every time and never for a second consider having something different, but what suited you ten years ago won't necessarily suit you now.
There are so many ways in which your hair can accentuate your good features and disguise the slightly more unsightly ones.
First up is a forehead filled with expression. If you have wrinkles or frown lines on your forehead, a fringe is the ideal cover up. It doesn't need to be too heavy and can be flexible.
A fringe is so versatile, injecting an instant burst of youthfulness to your face, as well as camouflage.
Then there's crows feet. A style that frames your face will cunningly disguise these lines and accentuate other features. Soft layers is where it's at as they instantly open and broaden the face.
I am a fan of long hair. Nowadays, there's not a time limit on having long locks. It all comes down to choosing the best length for your height and face shape.
If you decide to keep your hair long there is one key factor that is essential for pulling it off – condition. As we get older hair can become finer, dryer and sometimes weaker. These factors can cause hair to lose its shine and vibrancy.
Having a regular conditioning treatment will improve the texture and appearance of the hair. Treat yourself to one of these every time you visit the salon and pick up an at-home treatment too. Apply this while relaxing, reading or pottering and allow it to soak in for as long as possible to inject some moisture into your hair. Wella SP Luminous Mask is tailor-made for reconstructing your hair whilst providing a flawless, sparkling shine.
If you have a graceful neck, choose a great short style and show off your best features. A cropped style can be easy to manage, but can also be versatile in terms of how you can wear it.
A sassy crop gives a young, spirited and refreshed look. Helen Mirren is a perfect example of someone who can carry off shorter styles. Helen's short, layered cut really enhances her cheekbones and complements her face shape. Her colour is subtle and very chic; it's a mixture of highlights and lowlights, adding interest and warmth.
Often skin tone changes with age and can become lighter. As a result of this your hair colour will look different and will need to become warmer to suit your changing tones. Going grey doesn't have to mean an all-over colour to hide it all. Blend in your colour with some highlights to create a softer look.
Your hair can be your best asset, look after it and use it to your advantage. Go for a modern hairstyle with movement and texture, to keep an air of youthfulness about your look. Leaf through magazines and take a few pictures to your stylist for inspiration. This acts as a great guide and you can discuss what version of a style would suit you.
