THEY have been hailed as the shape of things to come, but Google’s ground-breaking smart eyewear technology Project Glass took to the catwalk yesterday at an event that kicked off New York Fashion Week.
The week’s opening unveiled a hi-tech collaboration between Google co-founder Sergey Brin and designer Diane Von Furstenberg.
Teaming up the cutting-edge technology, which beams information on to the wearers’ lenses, with the latest fashion, it is the first time the project has made a public appearance at a non-Google event.
The idea behind Project Glass is to pair the owner’s glasses with their smartphone, so that they can access and view information directly through the spectacles.
Beyond just showing off the glasses to the public, the models at the catwalk show also used the technology to shoot footage for a behind-the-scenes video of the Furstenberg event that will be featured on Google’s YouTube channel.
“Beauty, style and comfort are as important to Glass as the latest technology,” Mr Brin said. “We are delighted to bring Glass to the runway together with DVF.”
It is anticipated that the technology will debut on the open market sometime in 2014.
