Scots band set to write next Harry Potter music

THE lead singer of Mercury Music Prize-winning band Franz Ferdinand revealed yesterday that his group had entered negotiations to write the soundtrack for the next Harry Potter film.

Alex Kapranos, the frontman of the Glasgow band, who have sold more than two million copies of their debut album in 12 months, claimed he was thrilled to be asked to be involved in the Hollywood blockbuster and even hoped to secure a role in the movie.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the fourth film in the series, is expected to be another box-office hit when it is released next year, and although discussions over the soundtrack are at an early stage Franz Ferdinand hope they will be able to find time in their schedule.

Kapranos said the band were big fans of the adventures of JK Rowling’s teenage wizard.

He said: "We’ve been asked to write some music. There’s a section where there’s a band of ugly sisters playing, and I think some members of Franz Ferdinand may be the ugly sisters in the band.

"There’s an excitement and innocence about those films. I like how there’s good and evil and that’s a clarity which is quite refreshing."

The rock star also revealed that fans can expect the band’s second album, which should be completed next year, to be in a style similar to the one which won them such acclaim.

Kapranos added: "We’re not going to be drastically different. We’re certainly not going to start using a bunch of effects pedals. We like the idea of capturing a band in a room playing live."
