JOHNNY Depp takes a step back from Hollywood blockbusters to give his most engaging performance in years, as he loses his hair and steps into the shoes of one of America’s most notorious gangsters
WHAT IS IT?
Black Mass is a mobster flick about one of the US’s most notorious gangsters, James ‘Whitey’ Bulger, directed by Scott Cooper and starring Johnny Depp.
WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
The film depicts the tale of South Boston criminal, James Bulger, who operated with near-immunity from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. He cut a deal with childhood friend and FBI agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) to become an informant, but as this secret pact deepens it becomes less clear who’s using who. Benedict Cumberbatch, meanwhile, plays Bulger’s brother Bill, a state senator. As Bill becomes more powerful, his brother’s crimes become more frequent.
DOES IT LOOK ANY GOOD?
Early reviews seem positive: critics have said Johnny Depp gives his best performance in years – and the trailer above certainly backs that up. The eye-grabbing supporting cast includes Kevin Bacon, Peter Sarsgaard and Juno Temple.
• Black Mass will be released in UK cinemas on November 25
